Corning receives 2020 Corporate Technical Achievement Award for the development of Corning® DuraTrap® GC gasoline particulate filters

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) announced Thursday that it received the 2020 Corporate Technical Achievement Award from The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) for the development of Corning® DuraTrap® GC Filters for automotive emissions control. ACerS annually recognizes a corporate member for a single outstanding technical achievement that has been successfully commercialized and represents a gain to society.

DuraTrap GC filters are Corning’s newest innovation in automotive exhaust filtration for emissions control and represent an important engineering advancement for clean-vehicle technology. In many countries today, gasoline-vehicle emissions control systems focus on reducing gaseous pollutants with a catalytic converter, and particulate emissions are emitted largely unchecked. However, with the implementation of new emissions standards in Europe and China, DuraTrap GC filters are helping automakers introduce new gasoline-vehicle models in both markets that achieve the lowest level of fine particulate emissions during a vehicle’s lifecycle. This is critical as gasoline-engine vehicles, including hybrids, grow in popularity with consumers.

“Corning realized early on that fine particulates would be the next frontier in emissions reduction and adapted the proven design of a diesel particulate filter to the unique environment of the gasoline engine,” said Lutz Kercher, Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) program director for Corning’s Environmental Technologies business, which develops and produces a variety of cellular ceramic products for vehicle emissions control. “DuraTrap GC filters feature a cordierite ceramic microstructure specifically engineered to trap fine particulates and significantly help reduce the emissions impact of a vehicle.”

Most gasoline engines emit trillions of largely invisible particles of exhaust-borne carbon soot and ash every kilometer, which contribute to air quality challenges and impact human health. DuraTrap GC filters deliver excellent filtration efficiency of these nanoparticles, including PM2.5, before they reach the tailpipe without impacting the vehicle’s performance or fuel economy.

Kercher and development colleague Dr. Roychelle Ingram-Ogunwumi, senior project manager, GPF, will formally accept the award on behalf of Corning Environmental Technologies during ACerS’ virtual awards celebration in early October.
